The Stylish Couple’s Guide to Choosing Wedding Suppliers
Your wedding suppliers are more than the people you book to photograph your day, arrange your flowers or create your stationery.
They are the people who help bring your vision to life.
From the photographer who quietly captures the moments you didn’t even realise were happening, to the florist who understands exactly how you want the room to feel, the suppliers you choose become part of your wedding story.
And for style-loving couples, choosing your wedding suppliers can be just as important as choosing the venue, the dress or the flowers.
Because the most beautiful weddings I photograph aren’t necessarily the ones that have followed every trend or had the biggest budget.
They’re the ones that feel completely, unmistakably theirs.
So, if you’re currently building your dream team, here are a few things I’d consider before you start booking.
Start with your own style
Before you fall down the Pinterest and Instagram rabbit hole, take a moment to think about what you actually love.
Not what you’ve seen everywhere.
Not what everyone else seems to be doing.
And not necessarily what the algorithm has decided is currently “in”.
Think about the places you love, the clothes you wear, the interiors you’re drawn to, the colours you naturally gravitate towards and, most importantly, how you want your wedding to feel.
Perhaps you love understated elegance. Maybe you’re drawn to colour, beautiful old buildings, wild florals or a more relaxed countryside aesthetic.
There doesn't need to be a perfect label for your style.
Your wedding should simply feel like an extension of you.
Look beyond the pretty portfolio
Of course, you want to love a supplier’s work.
But when choosing your wedding suppliers, look a little deeper than the Instagram grid.
For photographers in particular, ask to see a full wedding gallery rather than just the handful of images that make it onto social media.
Do you love the way they tell the whole story?
Can you imagine yourself in their photographs?
Do they capture the atmosphere, the people and the little moments as well as the beautiful details?
The same applies to your florist, stationery designer, stylist and other creative suppliers.
A beautiful portfolio is a wonderful starting point, but you’re looking for someone whose work consistently feels right for you.
Choose suppliers who understand your aesthetic
Your suppliers don't all need to look identical.
In fact, I think it’s much more interesting when they don’t.
But there should be a sense of connection between them.
Your venue, flowers, stationery, fashion, styling and photography should feel as though they belong to the same story.
This is where choosing suppliers who genuinely understand your aesthetic can make such a difference.
A florist who understands why you love an abundant, slightly undone arrangement.
A stationery designer who knows that you want something elegant rather than overly formal.
A photographer who understands that you want photographs that feel natural and beautiful, rather than overly posed.
When everyone understands the feeling you're trying to create, the details tend to fall into place naturally.
Don't be afraid to choose personality over popularity
There are some incredibly talented wedding suppliers out there.
But the supplier with the biggest following or the longest list of awards isn't automatically the right supplier for you.
Your wedding is personal, so your suppliers should be too.
Think about how you feel when you speak to them.
Do they listen?
Do they ask questions?
Do they understand what you're trying to create?
Do you feel comfortable being completely yourself around them?
These things matter.
Especially on your wedding day, when you'll be surrounded by your suppliers for hours at a time.
You want people who make you feel relaxed, looked after and completely at ease.
Think about how you want to feel on your wedding day
This is particularly important when choosing your wedding photographer.
You can have the most beautiful wedding in the world, but if you spend the entire day worrying about where you're supposed to stand, whether you're posing correctly or whether you've had enough photographs taken, you're not going to experience the day in quite the same way.
I believe your photography should fit around your wedding rather than the other way around.
There will be a little direction when you need it, of course. But there should also be plenty of space to simply enjoy your people, your champagne, your dinner, the music and everything you've spent so long planning.
The photographs should tell the story of the day you actually lived.
Not a version of it created purely for the camera.
Choose people whose values align with yours
Style is important.
But so are values.
When you're choosing wedding suppliers, think about what matters to you beyond aesthetics.
Perhaps you care about buying locally, supporting small businesses, sustainability, craftsmanship or creating something that feels genuinely personal.
Perhaps you simply want suppliers who care deeply about what they do.
I think there is something really lovely about building a wedding team where those values align.
Because when your suppliers care about the same things you do, the experience becomes much more collaborative.
And usually, much more enjoyable.
Don't let trends make all your decisions
Wedding trends can be beautiful.
I'm certainly not anti-trend.
But I do think it's worth asking yourself one question before you commit to something:
“Would we still love this if we hadn't seen it on Instagram?”
If the answer is yes, go for it.
If it's no, perhaps give yourself a little more time.
Your wedding photographs will become part of your family history. You'll look back at them years from now, long after today's trends have disappeared from your feed.
The details that tend to stand the test of time are the ones that had meaning behind them.
Your grandmother's brooch.
The flowers you chose because they remind you of home.
The stationery inspired by somewhere you love.
The old car you've always dreamed of arriving in.
The slightly ridiculous dance floor moment that absolutely had to happen.
Those are the things that make a wedding yours.
Think about the whole story
One of my favourite things about photographing weddings is seeing how all the little decisions come together.
The invitation sets the tone before the day has even begun.
The flowers bring colour and atmosphere.
The dress and suit choices tell you something about the people wearing them.
The venue creates the backdrop.
The music changes the energy of the room.
And then there are the things you could never have planned — the hug from your dad, your best friend crying during the speeches, everyone spilling onto the dance floor, the look you give each other when you finally have a moment alone.
That's what makes a wedding feel cohesive.
Not everything matching perfectly, but everything telling the same story.
Choose suppliers you actually like
This might sound obvious, but it's one of the most important things.
You'll spend a surprising amount of time with your wedding suppliers.
You'll probably email them a lot.
You'll make decisions together.
You'll ask questions.
You'll change your mind.
And on the wedding day itself, they'll be right there with you.
So choose people you genuinely like.
People you trust.
People who make the process feel exciting rather than stressful.
People whose work you love, but whose company you enjoy too.
Because your wedding planning experience is part of the story as well.
And finally, trust your instincts
There is no single formula for creating a stylish wedding.
There is no definitive list of colours you should use, flowers you should choose or trends you need to follow.
The most memorable weddings I've photographed are often the ones where the couple trusted their own instincts.
They knew what they liked.
They knew what mattered to them.
And they weren't afraid to do things a little differently.
The result wasn't necessarily the most extravagant wedding.
It was simply one that felt true to them.
And ultimately, I think that's what good wedding design is all about.
Your wedding, your story
Choosing your wedding suppliers is about finding the people who understand the story you're trying to tell — and who can help you bring it to life in a way that feels natural, considered and completely your own.
So by all means, save the Pinterest boards.
Make the moodboards.
Fall in love with beautiful flowers and gorgeous venues.
But amongst all of that, don't forget to ask yourself the simplest question:
Does this feel like us?
If the answer is yes, you're probably heading in the right direction.
And when it comes to your wedding photography, I want exactly the same thing.
Beautiful photographs, of course.
But more importantly, photographs that feel like you — the people you love, the atmosphere of the day, the little moments you didn't see coming and all the things that made your wedding yours.
Because years from now, that's what you'll want to remember.
